If you already have private/group/employer health insurance for your child, start by applying for TennCare/Medicaid. I know it sounds weird but you have to apply for TennCare and then get denied in order to qualify for the Katie Beckett Waiver.
If you already have TennCare, your next step is to apply for the ECF Choices Waiver. This is for all age children even though some people will tell you it starts at age 14. This is not true.
You can be a paid caregiver in TN as of 2026 due to changes in legislation. I personally get paid to be the caregiver for my son who is under 18. There is a different program for over 18. Regardless, step #1 is being on a waiver. Katie Beckett or ECF Choices are the 2 waivers for under 18. Eventually our children age out of Katie Beckett and the only waiver left is ECF Choices. Some people might still be on the old 1915c waiver as well.
If you are not currently on a waiver (Katie Beckett or ECF Choices, The Arc offers a family support grant of $1,000+ and all families are eligible it just depends on what county you live in for the process to apply:
TN Caregiver Coalition offers a $600 grant for respite to all families (all ages) with special needs and also anyone that is a caregiver for an elderly adult even if they do not have special needs.
If your child is over 19 they may qualify for extra benefits through Medicare. Medicare is for people 65 and over but also for those under 65 with a disability. It takes 2 years to qualify for Medicare once you are deemed disabled so be sure to apply early and get that clock ticking!
